Reopening JCNC Religious Operations

Effective Tuesday, June 15

Pranam and Jai Jinendra!

With the reopening of California just over 15 months after the declaration of the COID-19 pandemic, we are pleased to announce the new JCNC religious operations. We request you to please take a few minutes to read about what is changing and why.

  1. Pakshal, Abhishek, Kesar Puja and Gabhara access

You will now be able to access Gabhara just like normal and participate in Pakshal, Abhishek as well as Kesar Puja. We will be observing regular activities per the normal Pujari schedule and request your cooperation. Please avoid overcrowding and ashaatnaa of any kind.

  1. Vidhaan and Puja conducted in Rang mandap

Vidhaan and puja such as snatra puja will now be allowed in the rang mandap based on a previously approved program schedule. Please note that all participants must follow the instructions of the person conducting the program. This includes wearing a mask at all times and not leaving dravya behind after the puja or vidhaan. This means you cannot bring or perform dravya / akshat puja and leave the Dravya / akshat for disposal by Pujari.

  1. Arti, Mangal Divo, Bhavna and Jaap conducted in Rang mandap

Bhavna and Jaap will be allowed to be conducted in Rang mandap. Except the performing signers, all performers and participants will be required to wear a mask at all times. Programs may be available for virtual participation through Youtube. Please check the detailed schedule for information about virtual participation.

  1. Swadhyay and Bhakti

Swadhyay and Bhakti may be conducted in the larger assembly area beyond the rang mandap behind the partition. Such events will also require all participants to wear a mask at all times.

  1. Mask wearing and other restrictions

When inside the temple area (upstairs), you are requested to wear a mask. We also request you to avoid overcrowding and respect participation limits. We will arrange overflow areas such as in classrooms and auditorium so that you can comfortably attend in person.

Per recommendation of the County health officials, following are the rules of entry inside the Bhawan:

  • Do not enter the facility if you have COVID-19 symptoms;

  • Maintain a minimum six-foot distance from others when possible;

  • Face coverings is required during certain activities, but overall guidance is relaxed;

  • Do not shake hands or engage in any unnecessary physical contact.

Shrut Panchami

Tuesday, June 15 (Jyeshth shukla panchami)

Shrut Panchami  is when one of the most important Jain scripture  "Shatkhandaagam" was completed. It was the first time when any Jain shastra was scripted and printed. It is the day of showing respect for JinVaani by doing shastra daan or by restoring and preserving old Jain scriptures and worn out JinVaani books.

Please join us for JinVaani puja @ 7:00 AM. We will start with abhishek followed by dev shastra guru puja and jinvaani puja.

Puja will be allowed only for the first 25 participants, after which you can come for darshan.

Sad Demise of Shri Dr. Padmanabh Shrivarma Jaini, PhD

JCNC PR

Late Shri Dr. Padmanabh Shrivarma Jaini, PhD (1923-2021)

The Jain Center of Northern California expresses its profound sorrow and grief on the sad demise of world-renowned scholar Dr Padmanabh S. Jaini, PhD who breathed his last on May 25, 2021.

Dr Padmanabh Jaini was one of the founders of Jain Center of Northern California and its predecessor organization Jain Milan. He played a critical role at the highly acclaimed 1991 JAINA Convention.

Dr Jaini was a doyen of Jain religion and veritable encyclopedia of Indian philosophy. He was one of the world’s leading scholars of Jainism and Buddhism. An Ideologist who mastered several languages, Dr Jaini wrote largely on Buddhism and Jainism.

He was Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley, where he taught for nearly a quarter of a century. Professor Jaini was the author of several books and papers. All his academic endeavors met with great success. It was here at UC Berkely that he wrote his groundbreaking masterpiece, “The Jaina Path of Purification”, in 1979, followed by several other books, articles and academic papers, all of enduring archival value. Dr Jaini became a colossus in the world of Jain and Buddhist studies. In all, he wrote 17 highly acclaimed books and over 80 articles.

Not only was Dr Jaini known for his erudition, but also his brilliant teaching and incomparable memory. He was also a marvelous raconteur, blessed with a tremendous sense of humor. Dr Jaini did not care much for titles or honorifics and wore his profound learning very lightly. He was highly sought after, yet also highly approachable. Several leading Ideologists today chose a career in academics after meeting him.

JCNC was fortunate to have Professor Jaini as a Life Member. We shall forever remember his contributions and legacy in the making of the JCNC. On 90th birthday, JCNC and JAINA recognized his lifetime contributions to our religion.

A person that departs from this earth never truly leaves, for they are still alive in our hearts and minds, through us, they live on. Professor Jaini will be remembered forever.

We pray for the eternal peace of the departed soul. Om Shanti….

The day of Akshaya Tritiya is very auspicious as on this day the very first "ahara charya": a methodology to serve food to Jain sadhus was established.

Bhagwan Shri Rishabhdev denounced the worldly pleasures after dividing his vast kingdom amongst his 100 sons. Bhagwan Rishabhdev meditated without any food and water for six months and after that set out to accept food (ahara, GOCHARI). He was the first sadhu of this era. Bhagwan Rishabhdev went to people to accept food. However, the people of that time did not know anything about the lives and codes of conduct of sadhus, as he was the first sadhu of this Avsarpinī. The people of Ayodhya offered him gold, jewelry, gemstones, elephants, horses, expensive garments and even their daughters to honor their beloved king.

But Bhagwan  was not in search of these things. He sought only a morsel of food, but nobody offered it to him. Nobody understood that their king was looking for food to ensure that the sadhus who would come after him get food and water in the purest form needed to lead an ascetic life. As there was no choice, he had to fast for one year, until Prince Shreyans Kumar understood his need due to his "jaati-smarana" (previous life perception or memory). Shreyans Kumar offered him sugarcane juice and thus Bhagwan Rishabhdev ended his fast. This was on the day of Akshaya Tritiya. On this day, Jains who observe Varshi-Tap, end their Tap with sugarcane juice.

Akshaya means one that never diminishes

We will be celebrating Akshaya Tritiya on Friday May 14, 2021 (Vaishakh Shukla Tritiya) from 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM.

The abhishek and rituals will be on Zoom and viewed at the URL below:

Pranam and Jai Jinendra,

Shri Nalin Vadilal Shah, took Arihant Sharnu and became Mokshgami on May 4, 2021 at age of 70 in Ahmedabad. He is survived by his two children and three grandchildren. He was born in Sathamba, Gujarat into a Jain Family. He studied BA, History from M.S.University, Vadodara. He spent his last few years in Jin Shashan Seva by doing countless Swadhyays and Samayiks. He visited us a couple of times in the last 5 years and participated in many JCNC events, puja and swadhyay classes.

He always will be remembered as an exceptionally simple, loving and caring person by us.

While he was fighting with COVID, we all prayed for his speedy recovery, held Uvasagharam, Bhaktamar and Navkar Mantra Jaap. In his last few days, he got constant healing of Bhaktamar Stotra from well known healers. We believe that all these prayers really helped him to achieve Shanti and Samadhi.

In light of COVID restrictions, we have arranged a Zoom based online Bhkati Bhavna on Saturday,15th May 2021 at 8:00 PM PST to honor and celebrate the life of Shri Nalin Vadilal Shah.

We humbly request you to join us in this Bhakti to pay respect to our father and pray for his soul to achieve Moksha soon.

Virtual Jeev Daya Tours on May 15, 2020

JCNC Education

Jai Jinendra!

Ahimsa Parmo Dharam is a concept ingrained in our Jain philosophy.

We try to instill this concept in our shala kids providing them first hand experience via Jeev Daya trips.

Traditionally, JCNC Education has promoted Jeev Daya Trip. However for the past 3 years, we have not been able to take our kids on Jeev Daya trip and enrich their learning in this important aspect of Jainism. This year we are bringing Virtual Jeev Daya Trip to our junior shala kids and the community.

There will be 2 virtual tours held on Saturday May 15, 2021 @10:00 am and 11.00 am respectively.

The first Virtual tour will be given by Sri Surabhi Go Kshetra in Pleasanton

The second Virtual Tour will be given by Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary in Weld County, Colorado.

Please register for the event to receive the meeting invitation. Please click on both links to receive invitation for both the tours.

Jai Jinendra and Sadar Pranam,

I am pleased to share the news that the 2021 JAINA Awards Committee has selected Shri Prembhai Jain for JAINA Ratna Award. Award will be presented during the 2021 JAINA Virtual Convention in July.

On behalf of the Jain Center of Northern California I convey hearty congratulations and warm greetings to Prembhai and his family. Prembhai has made path-breaking contributions in furtherance of Jain religion and its principles.

Prembhai is the founding President of Jain Center of Northern California. He is also a co-founder of JAINA. He played a critical role at the 1981 JAINA Convention and signed up JCNC to be the founding member of JAINA. Since 1981, Prembhai Jain has been active in JAINA in different roles and has served with his time, effort, and financial support with distinction.

He was instrumental in the formation of Young Jains of America (YJA), for Youth, by Youth and run by Youth principles at the 1981 Jaina Convention.

Prembhai has been a frequent speaker at many YJA/YJI/YJP/JAINA conventions. And the list of distinguished services by him goes on which we will cover in detail in Darpan.

JCNC is proud that we have two JAINA Ratna Awardees from our center – Prembhai Jain and Girishbhai Shah.
